I usually don't watch this (yeah, yeah, I know) but I really don't. It was a boring night and I like Penn Jillette so I gave it a watch. I've always liked Penn and found him to be respectful, kind, thoughtful, that stuff.
What a turn around! Holy schnikes I have so little respect for him now. I wish I hadn't watch it at all. Did anybody else catch this?
I think the most disappointment part was his encouragement for his children to disrespect their temporary mom (fiancé of comedian Judy Gold) who was trying to demonstrate their family's tradition of Shabbat. His kids were ridiculing her and Penn just fed them more encouragement. It was positively shameful. He seemed very proud (he being a devout atheist). I would have thought he should be more proud at having raised children who could be respectful but apparently that's not of any concern.
Indeed, what his children may think is also of little concern to Penn. He comes across as the ultimate dictator in his household. He does not teach his children how to think but only what to think. He hates sports. Therefore they hate sports . . . all the way to little "Z", the only 8-year-old boy I've ever seen who was near tears proclaiming "I hate bikes" when he was offered the chance to learn to ride one. Why? Because bike riding is a sport and dad hates sports, is my best guess. Therefore, in order to please Dad I will reject bike-riding. Penn smiles with paternal pride. And so it goes. Whatever Penn hates, his kids hate. For God's (oops, sorry Penn) for Pity sakes give those kids the opportunities, the experiences and the open-mindedness and then let them decide for themselves.
Not to be too petty but their home was also revealing. It's an ultra-modern mansion in the middle of nowhere. In my opinion any healthy home in which children live always has evidence of said child everywhere. YOu can't peek into any room with seeing something that belongs to a kid. Not so at Penn's house. It's pretty sterile.
So enough about that. I think I'm disturbed because I was so disappointed to see the side of someone that is so far removed from what I thought about him. From hero to zero in a flash. I really wish I hadn't watched it.
