I’m a Tivo newbie. There, I’ve said it. I purchased a Tivo Roamio Plus on eBay in May of 2014.
For the first week the Tivo worked great. I enjoyed the new menus, exploring the options that came with the box (much better than my local cable company DVR offerings). After a week everything started to go wonky.
Issue 1: The first thing that started happening was the sound going out. Watching Live TV or one that I’d recorded, the sound would go out, come back on, go out, come back on, in no discernable pattern. Sometimes setting the Tivo on Standby and turning off the tv, then back on would resolve it. Sometimes it required that I unplug the HDMI cable. Sometimes it required that I unplug the power cord.
The sound going out wouldn’t happen every day. Or even on a regular basis. At least not at first. Now it happens every time I have the TV on.
Issue 2: Then, the picture started going out. Simply going black. Then coming back on. Then going black. I could be in the Tivo menu, or on Live TV, or watching a recorded show. To fix this always required unplugging the power cord and plugging it back in.
Issue 3: On Saturday July 12 the weirdest thing started happening. The picture , when on Live TV, remained in the upper right hand corner of the screen. As if it thought I was still looking at the Tivo menu. (this is a TV that does not have picture-in-picture, by the way). I found the following online, but the suggested workaround didn’t do it for me:

Repeated reboots (unplugging power and HDMI cable, then the Coax cable as well) have not resolved this issue at all.
As of today, July 16 2014, the Tivo is not usable. The picture remains in the upper corner of the screen. The sound goes in and out. The picture goes black. At the moment all cords are unplugged from the box- I left it that way before leaving for work this morning.
I have been wondering if what I need is a new hard drive, and intend to do some testing (if, in fact, there are tools there to test the hard drive on a Roamio. Haven’t gotten that far yet)
However, I figured I’d also appeal to the collective wisdom of those who have had Tivos much longer than I. Has anyone seen any of these behaviors before?
I will note that I know none of these issues have to do with the TV itself. Watching anything else on the TV (Blu Ray, or anything over Chromecast for example) works just dandy. Sound and picture quality are consistently good.
