Hoping to get some advice - I'm British but am likely to be making a permanent move to America (most likely San Diego) so am a bit unsure on how things work.
At home I have a custom built HTPC running Windows 7 and use MCE. It's been bulletproof so far and my recordings are on a Drobo box connected via USB3 (also mapped as a network drive to other computers but can be used independently from the HTPC) - it's loaded with 5x 4TB HDDs and around 16TB usable storage capacity....
