Audio Problems

I have a Mini that is several years old. I’ve never had any issues with it previously, but over the past few weeks I’ve noticed the audio dropping out for a few seconds at a time. It was set to DD so I switched it to PCM. This stopped the drop outs but introduced some quality issues (sound almost sounds more compressed). If I switch back to DD, the dropouts come back. This is an optical connection to a sound bar. Any suggestions?
