Help with Returning Tivo Mini to Amazon?

I had to return a Mini back to Amazon because of issue. Called Tivo support to get it removed (deactivated) from my account. They are claiming they can not do it and Amazon has to? Sounds crazy to me. I could not get a real answer from support, just kept saying sorry we can't do that. Is that the case? Anybody else have this issue? Thanks
