Thinking of switching from Windows Media Center PCs around my house to a TiVo setup. I owned a TiVo years and years ago before I went WMC and loved it.
I'm primarily looking for something to spread my Verizon FIOS/cable card service around the house, but the big drive is integrated Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. support which is horrible in WMC. I need to keep things very wife/kids friendly, so single remote and single source is always my goal.
I tried adding some Amazon FireTV Sticks to the TVs around my house and I do like them but looking for a cleaner solution, and while I do share recordings with Windows Media Center I believe things would be a bit cleaner with a TiVo setup.
My biggest concern is being able to stream my ripped movie collection which is probably used 50% of the time. I currently use Emby but understand there is a Plex app for TiVo.
I have hardwired gigabit ethernet to every location.
I had some questions and was hoping to get some clarifications/answers/tips/advice:
1 - I see that a new model may be released soon, and I see some discussion about what it might have. Most thoughts seem to think it's a cost-reduced model. Any rumors that it might be a more app/online-centric device but still have CableCard? Cable Card is priority, but something more online-centric might be enticing to me. Might a faster CPU be in the cards for better app support?
2 - Is TiVo actively adding more apps to their existing devices? I see things like the WWE Network app are not available. While we don't subscribe now, I could see that being something my kids might ask for.
3 - The Plex app is of great interest to me because I have a Windows server that stores all my ripped movies. I absolutely need a good solution to keep this functionality if I move to TiVo, and I want it as integrated as possible on 1 TV source. Does this app work well? Are there any major limitations? I believe I read that it was limited to 720p, which may not be a deal breaker but definitely a nuisance. While I might not mind dropping the quality down, re-encoding my rips would be a major pain. I also hear UI performance may be lacking. I don't typically have thousands of movies ripped, but a solid 75-150 I'd say. I do periodically clean up old movies have already watched and have no interest in watching again.
4 - Any other options worth investigating to stream movies from a Windows server other than Plex?
5 - Do the Minis work well in general? I see they have app support (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.)? Can they also use the Plex app? I don't see it listed.
6 - I see some people say they have multiple TiVos. With the Minis available, why have multiple TiVos? Just for more tuners/storage, or are there key limitations to the Minis?
7 - I see the Roamio Plus is the lowest-end model to offer streaming to Android/iOS out of the box. This is attractive to me and I think a great feature. Does it work well? I see you can stream from a web browser as well which is great! The current promos don't seem to be available for the Plus or Pro models.
8 - I see the Roamio Pro model offers additional storage vs. the Plus. Any other features I might be missing? I know you can upgrade the hard drive. Any warranty issues (break the seal, etc.) if I decide to do so? Or does TiVo look the other way on this stuff? For $200 extra I'm wondering if it's not worth the hassle since a 3TB drive is over $100 anyway...
9 - I see the Mini includes a RF remote. I hear the older Mini includes an IR remote. Any other differences? Is it safe to assume the RF remote includes learning abilities to control power and volume on my TVs so I can use just a single remote?
I think that's about it! Thanks in advance for any input, I greatly appreciate it!
