So my backup TiVo HD XL is misbehaving again, it got a new hard drive almost two years ago, HDMI went out over the summer (now using Component), but I think this is the power supply, opinions welcome. Fortunately the Premiere cable card only unit is doing fine. Both have lifetime.
Because I have to use a tuning adapter with the cable card on the Premiere, the XL is OTA only on favorite programs for those times I don't notice the tuning adaptor crapped out earlier and nothing gets recorded, at least the family is happy. Plus it helps keep free space on the Premiere, but I suppose I don't "need" it, and wife certainly doesn't want to spend money replacing it given its shadow status
ISSUE:
XL is rebooting and I found it stuck on welcome screen twice in three days week. If it pull plug and try again it will get through and boot. Opened and dusted out last night, no obvious capacitor issues but I have bad eyes. I tried copying a show (TiVo desktop) and watching one, and it rebooted about forty minutes in. I then disconnected the antenna and remembered to take pictures of all the now showing and season pass screens so I know what I might want to copy or add back to the Premiere. Tried again, finished show but rebooted on next show.
Left it unplugged for a day, booted fine, not pushing luck: no show watching, just copying to TiVo desktop and after an hour no crash, so I am also copying from the other TiVo simultaneously, getting off a few shows I want to keep. Been about five hours, still going.
So pretty sure it isn't the hard drive and being gentle on the power needs might let me save some shows.
Not going to try to do capacitors myself, hate to spend $100 for a weaknees supply but may eventually, hoping instead someone on this forum knows a better option, suggestion for Phoenix AZ area repair or maybe a soldering enthusiast on this forum? I found a post listing capacitors but it seems for HD and not HDXL, wondering if that's going to match up?
Not sure it's the power supply, could be drive again but I am not going to kickstart when it might be the PS and crash it! Could hook to a computer to test but what to test with if I can't run kickstart or use Windows?
Future strategy: If I am patient would I be able to get any decent deal from TiVo on the antennae Roamio and a lifetime transfer? Looks like four hundred bucks which I doubt wife would support.
Resale value of wonky lifetime HDXL?
Thanks, love this place, been coming since DirectTivo days!
