Person of Interest - S05E10 - “The Day the World Went Away” - 05/31/2016

If I’m not mistaken, this is POI’s 100th episode.
And instead of opening with a bang, it opens with Harold having a quiet conversation with the Machine in an outdoor cafe about life and the dark future ahead.

The waitress thinks that Harold has been there before but he says he hasn’t.
Returning to the subway, Finch and Root debate closing the system and Harold decides to do so.

But trouble’s afoot as the Machine calls Reese with a new number, Harold Finch!

A Samaritan dispatched team of rent a goons comes after Finch at school and the team hustles Harold to the safe house while Shaw blames herself for blowing Finch’s cover identity.

Elias gets Harold out of there and takes him to an old safe house of his (a former meth lab) while the rest of the team deals with the goon squad.

Finch realizes that he blew his cover by going to that cafe as it was the one he and Grace went to on their first date.
Finch tells this to Root to tell to Shaw so she won’t blame herself.

Meanwhile Samaritan has tracked down Elias and Finch and while Elias and his people fight of the goon squad, Elias tries to get Harold out of there but takes a fatal headshot and Finch is captured.

Finch is brought before Greer who says that he doesn’t want to kill him but wants him to serve Samaritan willingly and is willing to throw Harold in a hole until he says yes.

While getting ready to move Harold, Root and Shaw show up with a copious amount of firepower to rescue Harold.
Shaw holds them off while Root and Harold escape in a getaway car and being chased by Samaritan operatives.

One of them is Jeff Blackwell who takes a shot at Finch but Root takes the bullet and they are captured by the NYPD.
(Is that the first time they’ve actually shown up to one of Team Machine’s melees?)

Root is in critical condition while Finch in in custody which is a problem because the Feds still have a treason file on him and want him bad.

But this is when Finch makes the decision that he will do what it takes to kill Samaritan.

The Machine calls Harold at a pay phone and speaks to him in Root’s voice because Root didn’t make it (Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!) and engineers Harold’s escape from custody.

With Harold in the wind, the rest of Team Machine needs to get to him because they now realize that they need to be afraid of what Harold might do next.

I was concerned that this was another simulation, especially when Root and Shaw were discussing metaphysics during the gun battle but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

The writers have certainly upped the stakes here and there’s a lot to like.
I mean who didn’t go, “Oh yeah”, when Shaw got out of the car with an assault rifle.

But has Harold hit the breaking point?
Will he sacrifice his morals for the greater good?

It does seems that they are setting up for a final showdown with Samaritan even though it cost them both Elias and Root.

(But if Root is dead, was it the Machine that did the voiceover in the beginning of the first episode of the Season?)

I look forward to the final episodes.
