I just ran into an unusual problem.
I'm a fairly new Tivo user. Had such great results with my Roamio Pro that bought one Mini to continue replacing my Time Warner Whole House system.
No problem there. Happy as a clam! The previous owner got me the number needed to activate it on my account.
Then I bought a second new RF-remote mini on eBay. It arrived in perfect condition.
Problems started when I tried to activate it. The message said, in short, "This unit cannon be activated. Please call (followed by a toll free number). I called the number - which turned out to be Wave Cable (a provider I'd never heard of). They lease Tivos/Minis to their subscribers but do not sell them, nor can they be sold.
In other words - it's a stolen unit. The only way to know is to try to activate it (too late - you've already bought it) or call Tivo with the TSN to find out if it CAN be activated.
I have no idea how many other cable companies lease Tivos but this one is local enough - just east of Los Angeles - that any coming from the "inland Empire" I'd check out prior to purchase, and I'm going to check nationally and see who else supplies them.
At least I got an immediate refund - the seller, who I can't tell is on the up-and-up or not, may have a big problem.
