Formatting Tivo HD and re-imaging?

My Tivo HD XL got stuck in a General Setup loop, then in a Kickstart 58 loop. When running Western Digital Diagnostics on the drive, the result was "Test stopped with error(s). Too many bad sectors detected."

This seems to indicate that the drive is damaged. However, I am skeptical. I never had any problems with playback, and my Tivo worked fine until I re-ran the Guided Setup. Nor have I ever had a hard drive that stopped working because of read/write errors. I've probably owned 100 hard drives in my life and when they fail, it's almost always a mechanical failure. Click, click...

So, I want to let the WD Diagnostics tool write zeros to the drive. I would also like to format it and see if if works normally in a Mac or PC. However, as I plan to re-image the drive (if it seems to be working fine), will it be a problem if I have formatted it in NTFS or Mac OS Extended, and changed the partition map (I see it's now Apple Partition map).

Any general advice here? As I plan to give away the Tivo (I got a new one now), I don't want to put in a new hard drive in if I don't have to.
