I have read several times in this forum that the phone connection is only needed (on old DirecTivos) when the DirecTivo is first initialized, first plugged in with a new disk and it wants to call the 1-800 init number.
This appears to be NOT true. I have an HDVR2 Hughes DirecTivo. It has been working fine for many years. 2 days ago I unplugged it and left it powered off for 2 days. I moved it to a new room plugged in satellite only and powered up.
No dice. Spent 30 minutes on the "Almost there, just a few minutes more" boot screen. Plugged in the phone line, power cycled, and bingo! Everything is up an running again in just minutes. So, it would appear that a phone connection is a necessity.
Bummer, since this is the only reason I still have a land line. If someone knows of a trick to NOT need the phone line I would love to hear it.
