Toshiba RS-TX20 Lifetime Service

Are there any Toshiba RS-TX20 Tivo units that Do NOT have lifetime basic service? I bought my Toshiba single tuner unit a few years ago (used, via ebay) and I have been using it for the past year or more with the basic service: three day max program listing; Recording any program during the three day window, etc.

I read about the tivo desktop and installed it on my PC, but I couldn't get it to work. After a couple days searching, I spent a while talking to Tivo customer support (two people on the phone and one chat) and they claim that my unit does NOT have lifetime basic service and the previous owner had paid monthly until he discontinued service (and sold the unit). The Tivo website and the CS rep. both insist that I must pay $12 something a month to activate my Toshiba, but it seems pretty activated to me--at least for basic service.

So, is it possible that my Toshiba is a "non lifetime basic service" unit that somehow has been receiving what looks like basic service, or is this a problem with the Tivo database, or just a misunderstanding?

Oh, my System Information screen on the Toshiba says it is "Series 2" but the CS rep insisted it was a "series 1"

Any ideas?
