Anyone watch this?
I thought it was interesting that they made (to me, anyway) both of the main characters extremely unappealing, unsympathetic people.
Frances has an affair, then tries to run from one man right to another, and is so afraid of being alone that when #2 (predictably) doesn't work out she tries to run right back to her husband. She knows she doesn't love him, and she also must know they don't have any chance of really fixing the marriage if she is still hung up on #2 and continues to lie about it, but she lies to him and tries to walk back all her decisions anyway. So she's decided to settle for a loveless marriage out of fear, spinelessness, and lack of insight, and she's planning to drag Robert back into it by giving him the false hope that they can work it out just so she doesn't have to be alone. Just nothing very appealing in her character for me.
Robert seems like a nice enough guy -- until the end, when he reveals himself as a complete and total a*****e by threatening to use the kids as weapons in the divorce by turning them against their mother. I get why he's pissed and wants out, of course, but making it your primary goal to sabotage your kids' relationship with their mom? Total d**k move.
There were things about it I did like -- I like the concept, thought the acting was good, had a couple of dark laughs, and liked what they showed of SJP's parenting struggles and hope they develop those relationships more. So I'll stick around for a while at least. But I'm really scratching my head about the decision to make both leads so unsympathetic right off the bat. I would understand a theme of "divorce makes good people behave badly" but don't they have to paint them as decent people in the beginning to make that work?
I'm hoping that if I keep watching I will someday stop thinking of SJP as Carrie, but it hasn't happened yet.
