Tivo remote, range for TV control

Have used many Tivos with many TV's without issue, and wondering if anyone has every experienced a TV model where the Tivo remote must be within 7 feet to control, and if so, is there some workaround you found?

Just bought a TCL 40D100 TV and the included remote works from across the room, as does my Harmony. Two different Tivo remotes both control the TV fine as long as they are close to the TV. I put new batteries of course, but no luck. The same Tivo remotes control other TV's without...
