Penny Dreadful: Pilot "Night Work" S1E1 5/11/14

Anyone watch this?

[Aside: If like me, you have a "pilot" wishlist, it didn't catch this as they didn't title Ep 1 "pilot".]

I'm not a fan of the horror/supernatural genre, and usually won't watch it. But the reviews were interesting, and it's being modeled along the lines of "True Detective" or "Fargo". In that a single writer created the entire season, it has a limited run (8 episodes), and brings some big names to the small screen, since they know it's only one season. I'm guessing if it's a success, Showtime will bring it back a la True Detective; new actors, new characters, maybe a new writer.

It stars Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green among others. Think of it as "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" but in the horror genre. Dr. Frankenstein, vampires, Jack the Ripper, etc. It also has Billie Piper, who I love, but I didn't see her in this first episode.

I thought it was an interesting start. It kept you involved and watching, and did a decent job of pilot-necessary exposition. Eva Green does a great job; curious to see where her character goes.

I may not stay for the series unless it becomes TD/Fargo level of wonderfulness, 'cause I just don't favor the genre. But considering my distaste of this field, I thought they had a good start.

You?

[Aside II: Not sure if this series warrants a season or episode thread, but will start this way.]
