Anyone else catch the premiere of Project Runway: Threads?
Lifetime has been promoting the heck out of this show during Project Runway for the last several episodes. I could see someone pitching this show to Lifetime as "Master Chef Junior, only with sewing machines."
The snags:
After watching last night's episode, my instant thought was, god help the other contestants if Kini ever had a niece or nephew on this show, and brought him as the assistant. ;)
But the show would be greatly improved if the show provided assistants who could sew, with the stipulation that the assistants couldn't do any pattern-making for the contestants, only sewing. If the garments were executed better, it would put the focus back on the design.
So unlike Master Chef Junior, which is pretty much like the grown-ups' show, this has a different flavor to it. The time period given is just too short to turn out a head-to-toe look, let alone two, without everything coming out as a crooked mess. No one at Lifetime seems to understand that crooked messes aren't visually appealing. I don't watch PR for the drama -- I watch it for the design. Obviously I must be in the minority.
Apparently there are eight episodes, each with three new contestants. I suppose it would take too long to have a sew off (start with nine groups of three, then have three sew-offs, and a final round with the three survivors).
The other "WTF are they thinking?" problem with the show is the timeslot.
Why isn't this show on at 8 PM, where kids can watch it?

The snags:
- Instead of a through-line, as with PR, you get three new contestants each week.
- Kids have "audition" looks which are judged, and the winner gets an advantage.
- The time allotted for the challenges is ridiculously short, but they still throw in a twist to liven things up.
- The designers have assistants to help them (their parents). The parents' sewing abilities vary widely (one parent taught her daughter to sew; one contestant taught her dad to sew for the purpose of coming on the show; one parent couldn't sew a lick).
- The kids pull from a wall of fabric provided by JoAnn, so they don't even get the fun of going to Mood
