Hello! I am new to this forum and have read a lot of threads regarding the HD series 3, but still have some questions. Hoping that you knowledgeable folks here can help me out :) (Forgive me in advance if any of my questions have been answered somewhere else on this forum, as I then must have missed reading it)
Little background: Just recently finally cut the cable cord and am strictly OTA with an antenna. Suburban area with about 15 channels (out of 30) worth watching. Came across a new and never used (original box, manuals sealed bags with cords and remote, etc) Series 3 HD Tivo at an estate sale. Appears someone bought it and just stuck it in a closet all these years.
Tivo Model: TCD652160
Manufactured date on back of sticker: 03-Aug-07
Purchased it thinking (yes I did not know anything about Tivo as I am a newbie!) I could use it for recording OTA without a subscription from Tivo. I thought it was like a regular DVR. Didn't know that I had to purchase a subscription in order to do so. I thought I could manually record the same show (for example the NBC Nightly News) by doing a manual record like a VCR. But I think (???) that is impossible.
I believe I read in the manual that was enclosed with my Tivo that a subscription could have been purchased at the same time the Tivo box is purchased. So now I am trying to figure out if my Tivo already has a subscription to it, even though it is new and has never been used. So my questions are as follows:
1) Is it possible to find out if my Tivo HD already has a subscription on it? I think I read on this forum that you can go through the Guided Set-Up and then you enter your Tivo Service Number but I was wondering if there was a way to get that information without going through the Guided Set Up? Customer Service phone call possibly? Website?
2) If I do not buy a subscription on this Tivo HD, I assume it is not usable for recording at all, even in some manual way?
3) Would it even be worth buying a subscription to Tivo on such an old machine? As the equipment is new and unused, I am assuming it should be working fine.
Thanks in advance for any light you can shine on these questions! I find all this stuff so confusing. As you can see, I am not a very electronic kinda gal!
