Unsubscribed Roamio w/out cablecard, will it boot?

If I hook up an unsubscribed Roamio that has no cablecard installed, will it boot up and download software updates?

I got a good deal with an Amazon coupon but don't currently have a need for it, but wanted to hook it up to see if it was working ok (knowing you couldn't do anything with it of course).
