tuning adapter

Just received my cable card from TWC for my Roamio and it came with a tuning adapter..Why do I need one ? I only plan on using the basic expanded plan ( 70 channels)..What is switched digital ?



I am 72 and a real novice on this stuff so any help will be appreciated..
