what is the HDMI for then?

OK, I was trying to get a TiVo Mini to work with a Slingbox 500. It wasn't (copy protection) and it was suggested to use the composite/component connections instead. While using the composite connection on the Slingbox 500 with the TiVo mini (via a breakout cable) seems to work for the most part, I thought I would set up another source on the HDMI connection. Specifically an Xbox 360 (for just its DVD player). Due to this, I am still getting the HDMI protection warning when trying to view the Mini on the composite connection.

Is this normal? Does this mean I pretty much can't have ANYTHING connected to the HDMI? If so, what is the point of the HDMI passthrough if most devices have the protection feature enabled? If so, I might as well have just gotten another Slingbox 350. I see HDMI splitters that claim to make the TiVO Mini work with the Slingbox 500

I also realize I could do like I did with my other 350 and connect a DVD player to its component connection, but again, seems kind of useless to have an HDMI connection if it really can't be fully used
