Expanding Storage on the Bolt

I'm planning on buying the WD DVR Expander (1 TB) from tivo.com... However, if the recordings are split equally between the TiVo and DVR Expander, and my TiVo Bolt is 500 GB, will the added storage only be 500 more GB?
