Halt and Catch Fire - S3E1&2 - 8/23/16 *spoilers*

1986: Mutiny has moved to the Bay Area. They just hit 100,000 users, but they're still operating like the bassackwards fly-by-night startup that they've always been, and people in California aren't easy to impress.

Cameron and Donna are ignoring their best employee, Ryan, who has solid ideas to help improve the product, but they're too focused on figuring out the next big thing. They decide that "IT" is a predecessor to eBay or Craigslist. Was there much of anything of an online marketplace in 1986?

Gordon is maintaining Mutiny's hardware, but he's unfulfilled and is thinking about looking for another job. He's also in the middle of a lawsuit against Joe McMillan for stealing Gordon's code to start McMillan Utility, the industry's anti-virus giant.

Joe is trying to figure out what the next "IT" is as well. He holds a very Steve-Jobsesque presentation in a theater where he announces that he's releasing a user version of his enterprise software that will be free. Ryan, Mutiny's best employee, is in the audience and he immediately falls under Joe's spell.

Cameron and Donna are trying to get VC funding for their marketplace expansion, but they're not getting any traction because the men in the industry don't take them seriously. Until they meet up with woman who is a partner at a VC firm.

Just as Gordon was trying to nurture Ryan's ideas, Ryan gets a call from Joe to come work for him, and Ryan quits Mutiny.

Gordon is clearly still sick but he's keeping the severity of it from Donna.

Discuss.
