I'm trying to figure out how to get my TiVo to work reliably again. The TiVo techs keep blaming Verizon's CableCARD and Verizon says its TiVo.
I'm leaning towards TiVo being the problem at this moment.
I was recording Olympics opening. Near the end of the recording, I start getting errors that channels aren't authorized. But my recording kept going on. So here I go again, the problems with TiVo not working on certain tuners and then the eventual degradation of work on all tuners. If I look at it funny, it will stop on all tuners.
I switch to FIOS channel 131. Which is supposed to be the channel to use when your CableCARD isn't paired. You know, what TiVo says is the problem.
Then I go into CableCARD settings. First it tells me "Non m-card inserted". Which is a mistake, because it was an m-card earlier in the day. Then after a few minutes on the screen, as I start to write this post, it switches to saying "No card". And then a minute later, I get "CableCARD Error... Please call your cable operator and report error code 161-17 to have this problem resolved."
This is already my third CableCARD. They all have the same problems... they work, sometimes for days, and then stop, and then start working again. It can't be faulty CableCARDS - it must be faulty TiVo. But how do I convince TiVo support to honor my warranty and replace my unit?
The last TiVo tech told me some B/S that the problem was the CableCARD wasn't paired correctly. It had a CCI value of 0x02 for Copy Once. I did my own research and learned this is normal nowadays. Recordings can't be transferred to unapproved devices; TiVo is an approved device. So the next time call a TiVo tech, it should not be right before their hours are ending, and hope to get a tech that doesn't blame it on a normal CCI setting.
Now after typing all of this, FIOS channel 131 is visible. So let's go jump into settings real quick. Going into settings, TiVo says I have an "M-Card inserted". But as I type this, it says "No card" now. Is it really a bad CableCARD if TiVo can't make up its mind on what's plugged into it? The exact same problem on 3 different CableCARDs?
Ok, restarting TiVo box now.
Let's see. My problem started in June/July. Was there a TiVo software update that broke stuff?
Ok, reboot is back. TiVo is working again. Let's go to 131 again and then check out settings. Ok, "M-Card inserted". Let's go read some settings now.
Ok. So my analysis there shows me that channels will show up as CCI:0x02 CP: Enabled and CCI: 0x00 CP: Disabled. This seems normal to me and is not a problem - the last TiVo tech didn't know what he was talking about. But now I'm educated myself, and will get past that point in the future.
Any tips or advice I'm missing here?
Thanks.
