The Prodigal son returns... (questions about new tivo units)

Several years ago I was a rabbid tivo fan. After a tivo series 2, Direct TV tivo, and 2 tivo HD's, I moved over to a HTPC based DVR system. I was happy with it for many years, but things have changed. Microsoft is phasing out windows media center, and I've dropped cable.

For less than a year now we have quite happily relied on streaming shows from hulu and netflix via smart apps on our TV and BR Player. With football season approaching quickly, I've thought about adding an antenna to pickup some local stations and of course, if I have live TV I've gotta have a DVR again... The new onepass feature tivo has looks like it would bring some order to the chaos of watching shows from multiple sources. My wife is actually thrilled at the thought of having a Tivo again!!!

I was looking at the Roamio OTA with lifetime when I found a friend with an older 500GB Roamio with a lifetime subscription he is willing to give me (He recently upgraded to a bolt).
In looking at these new Tivos, it appears a lot has changed. With the introduction of the streaming apps, onepass, RF remotes, tivo-steam, tivo-mini, etc... it looks like a completely different system from the two networked tivo HD units I used years ago. There is so much new stuff I'm having a difficult time sorting through what has been added and what has changed since I left tivo.
I have a large library of video files on a PC (ripped from my DVD library), and previously I was able to stream these from my PC to the tivo via pytivo. It worked well enough, but recall that the interface was a little clunky. Would this still work exactly the same way, or have they made any changes that would improve this functionally?

I am waiting on my friend to call and transfer the membership, but in looking online it appears that the remote he gave me may have been for an older tivo. It looks identical to the ones I am used to from years ago, and it doesn't have the A,B,C or D buttons. The tivo button is not silver and the plastic is a matte gray instead of the glossy black I'm seeing online. I'm pretty sure this is not one of the newer RF remotes. Can I expect this remote to still work correctly with the roamio? Are all the old remotes still compatible with the new tivos? I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, so if this remote will work I wont bother mentioning it to him.
