Subscription fee - more than just unreliable guide!

Ok I guess I never saw this as I've been with TiVo forever and always paid, but my Bolt service expired (came with 1 year of service) and I was shocked that the device locked all of the apps. That is outrageous. So I get the monthly fee and what it does, but why would box suddenly stop running apps that have nothing to do with the monthly service that is provided. I paid my fee and we're all good, but that suddenly reminded me that your TiVo is not like a streaming box (Roku, Apple TV,...
