Over the past month I've been collecting Tivo equipment in order to replace all 7 of my Verizon STB's. So I got myself a Roamio Plus with the loyalty discount, 1 mini using AMEX points, 3 mini's using BB gift cards and I grabbed to more mini's from eBay.
Previously I put the Roamio in the Family room and started getting the family familiar with our return to Tivo. So far not too bad.
This weekend I basically rewired the house for CAT5 to support the mini's I got 3 installed with 3 more to go. I decided against MOCA as I don't want a MOCA bridge and I plan on pulling my Verizon Router when I'm done. I've been using a checkpoint router for years and only ran the Actiontec in order to serve guide data to the STB's.
So far everything has gone really smoothly. I put the Roamio on it's own 8 port GIG switch with an uplink back to my main network so it can get to the internet to get tivo data. The Mini's are all on this switch as well so streaming data will not have to flow anywhere else on my network except on that switch. I figured the least amount of hops would yield the best possible throughput.
I'm kind of wondering when I get 6 mini's and the Roamio all running at the same time will the Roamio be able to keep up with all of this streaming? I guess I'll find out. I know I've only got a total of 6 tuners to work with and I figure I'll never be running all 6 mini's at the same time.
What really makes me happy is that my total equipment rental from Verizon will be 4.99 for the cable card. We never watch VOD so I'll not miss STB's one bit.
I guess if I have streaming problems I'd have to add another Roamio to run some of the mini's. Question: When you have more than 1 Roamio how do the Mini's allow selecting of a DVR? Will they always ask or once you "pair" a mini to a particular DVR will is basically stay there unless you make it switch to the other?
