The game show thread

I have Game Show Network on my lineup, and I've been avoiding watching it. Game shows are kind of like a big bucket of popcorn with endless refills for me. One you start eating, it's difficult to stop.

So I was curious about whether anyone else got addicted to game shows. What are your favorites, and why? I know a lot of the time with threads like these, people just make lists, but what I'd like to know is which part of the game play makes the game fun for you.

One of my all-time favorites is the BBC show Only Connect, about which the website says "Quiz show in which connections must be made between apparently unconnected things, where patience and lateral thinking are as vital as knowledge".

I especially loved the portion where the teams had to solve the wall. There's an online version you can try (see where it says "Revisit classic walls" and click the link "play the game").

For the US shows, one of my favorites is Pyramid. The clue-giving and solving for this show is nowhere near as demented as a British show like Only Connect, but I like the word play involved in giving good clues and trying to elicit the answers. It's always fun to see which celebrities turn out to be good Pyramid players.

For a play-along game, I like Wheel of Fortune, even though the wonky game play of the contestants can drive me crazy.

Trivia-style games where you have to know the answers to questions can be fun, too, but they aren't my favorites. Jeopardy can be especially annoying because some days the Final Jeopardy question seems absurdly easy, and on other days, really difficult.

Another older favorite was Name that Tune. There was a nice interplay between being able to guess what the song might be from the clue, then being able to see if you were right on the fewest number of notes.

So what are your favorites?
