Plex on Tivo Mini results in transcode on server

Recently I decided to try out Plex and setup a Plex Server on a Raspberry Pi. The Pi is able to keep up really well with audio trans-coding, however, really starts to sweat when it has to also transcode the video.

That said, when using the Plex Client on my Tivo Bolt and Tivo Mini I am seeing some interesting results.

On my Tivo Bolt the Plex client has no issues playing H264 1080p with AAC / AC3 Audio. The Bolt does initiate a transcode for the audio portion when the Audio is DTS.

On my Tivo Mini, despite having the latest firmware, the settings within the Plex client top out at 4Mbps 720p. Based on research done on this forum as well as the web at large, it seems like this should match the capabilities on other Tivo models and have 1080p options.

From the testing I've done it appears that viewing any media above 720p causes a transcode on the server (which throttles my poor little Pi) only to then be upscaled by the Mini to 1080p.

This post gets into it a little...

Has anyone had any luck getting the mini to function similar the Bolt? Is it that the Mini's specs are that far out of date to handle it? I have a hard time accepting that latter seeing as the Roku Stick is able to Direct Play the same content without issue.

Thanks in advance!
