If anyone is interested, after tinkering a bit I was able to install mike swanson's "Tivo Now Playing Gadget" on windows 10 with a tivo roamio today. It was originally written for windows vista nearly a decade ago.
As gadgets are no longer supported natively in windows 10, I had use a program called 8GadgetPack Tools to get this feature back.

Most of the instructions found here worked (but required a little modification):

Obviously IE7 isn't available in Win10, but it it works in IE11 also (I dont think you can do this in edge or a 3rd party browser). When you go to open internet explorer, you probably need to "open as administrator" by right clicking on IE
There was one thing that tripped me up for a while. Apparently tivo now uses the service number WITHOUT the dashes. I couldn't get it to work until I noticed that the certificate had the address listed without the dashes. I had to go into the host file again and remove the dashes and everything worked.
The other trap you can fall into is that you need to use the SERVICE NUMBER as the tivo address in the gadget's settings, NOT the IP address. This is explained in the instructions, but its easy to miss.
The gadget can be downloaded here:

This version also enables downloading the videos straight from the now playing list gadget by clicking on the title in the show details.
