The episodes opens with Shaw trying to get back to the City.
In the process, she beats up on a couple of coyotes in what is supposed to be the desert and all she needs to complete her impression is a cheroot and some Ennio Morricone music playing on the background.
Team Machine is back to basics with Reese tracking the latest number, Terry the locksmith, whos planting a bomb in a building.
Reese busts him but finds out that its not what it seems as hes being coerced by the Voice (whom you may remember S03E15 Last Call), who has Terry wife hostage.
Reese and Finch track down where they think the wife is being held object and Reese calls in backup for a raid but its a trap!
Reese is uninjured but is back to square one.
Meanwhile Fuscos giving Reese the cold shoulder due to him being so secretive and Roots tracking a radio engineer that may be connected to Samaritan
All this while Fusco busts a multiple murderer.
So Finch enlists the help of Elias to track down the Voice.
And Reese needs it because the Voice has multiple bombs planted in the city and most of the precinct is out dealing with the situation and this is where Terry is coerced to let the gang members i lockup out of their cells. He doesnt do it but someone else does.
(Assault on Precinct 13 anyone?)
Thats a problem because its basically just Reese and Fusco and a patrolman who helped Fusco earlier in the precinct. The gang members are going after Fuscos prisoner because hes worked for the Voice in the past and needs to be silenced.
Patrolman tries to shoot him but Reese has tumbled to the fact that hes working for the Voice and disables him.
But it may not matter with Reese and Fusco under assault by the gang and they are running out of ammo.
Finch and Elias track down The Voices lair and quickly realize that Terry the locksmith is actually the Voice, there to kill Fuscos prisoner. He gets the drop on Reese, whos saved by Fusco by taking a bullet in the shoulder for Reese but the prisoner is dead and the Voice slips away in the confusion of another gang member attack.
Finch tracks down The Voice at his getaway car who pulls a gun on him but Elias pulls a gun on the Voice so Mexican Standoff.
But the ever canny Elias planted a bomb on the Voices getaway car and sets it off, killing him.
He then chides Harold on knowing that he was going to do something like that.
Meanwhile, Root is tracking those Samaritan agents when someone else starts shooting them.
Some further tracking and Root comes face to face with the shooter, Shaw!
Root is overjoyed to see Shaw but the problem is that after 7000+ simulations, Shaw is still not sure whats real and if she can trust herself not to harm the people she loves.
Rather than hurt her friends, Shaw threatens to kill herself and Root, with that wacky Root logic that we love, says that if Sameen is going to off herself, shes going to as well.
Something that Shaw never saw in a simulation.
Back at the precinct, Reese decides its time to tell Fusco the truth about the Machine Wars and then they off to reunite with Shaw.
The issue I had with this episode is that I didnt care for the Voice as an adversary when we first met him back in Season 3. I felt that he was a second rate Root knockoff and not particularly a worthy adversary for Team Machine. I would have been perfectly happy if he never had appeared again.
I have a little interest in the question of who he was working for (was it Samaritan and Decima?) but thats about it.
This would have been a decent episode for Season 4 but with the shortened Season 5, do we really need to spend time on this?
I did like Elias blowing him up and it does raise the question of if Harold knew and wanted Elias to do that?
