Streaming or copying shows from Roamio while outside the US?

Hi,

I just learned that my employer is relocating me and my family to Europe in the near future, and I'm contemplating what to do with the Roamio Plus I purchased earlier this year. I may simply sell it and try to recoup some of the cost--it has lifetime service so hopefully I'll get a good price--but ideally, I'd like to use it access our favorite US shows from abroad. I have a good friend who has FIOS with a nice, fat, symmetric connection, and I think he'd be willing to host the box for my on his home network in exchange for allowing him to use it to record his own shows (we rarely use more than 2 tuners at once anyway).

Streaming to my iPad isn't really an ideal option, as AirPlay won't work so we wouldn't be able to watch on our TV. I understand that Tivo to Go only works over the local network, so I'd have to set up some sort of VPN arrangement. Hence my questions:

  1. Setting up a VPN and downloading the shows with PyTivo or the Mac equivalent might be the easiest option, but seems bandwidth intensive, even for a FIOS connection. If I go this route, does it make sense to record in SD? How much data would I save over HD?

  2. I have read others describe how to setting up a "permanent VPN" by bridging two routers so that I appear to be on the local network, and then using multi-room viewing. Would it be better to buy a Stream or a another Roamio (perhaps the base model with an upgraded HDD) in this scenario?

  3. If using multi-room viewing between two Roamios, is it possible to schedule transfers so that they move from one device to the other at a certain time, e.g., late night early morning when it won't impact my friend's broadband connection?

  4. Any other options that I have not thought of?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Sean
