Can lifetime subscriptions be used with any model?

Let's say I buy a Series 2 or Series 3 w/ a lifetime subscription off Ebay or Craigslist. Can I just trash the Series 2 and use that lifetime subscription with a newer unit like a Roamio or Bolt?
