would HD transfer retain content? + lifetime sub question

I currently own a series 3 TiVo HD (model TCD652160) that I pay yearly for.

I have a 1TB WD drive in there. Right now, I'm having an issue with the unit. I believe it's power supply related, but I'm not certain yet (please see http://ift.tt/2bfdRNm).

My question is this, if I purchase a series 3 TiVo HD from eBay that has lifetime, can I transfer my working HD from my current TiVo HD and retain it's contents? How about settings and channel prefs? Are those stored on the HD or in NV memory? If so, how would that work with TiVo corporate? Do a register a new unit under my account? If so, would it pick up and retain it's lifetime sub, therefore eliminating my yearly sub cost if I deactivate my current yearly unit? Would I be able to transfer my Verizon M-Card cablecard over without too much hassle?

The reason I want to do this is that I can get a used series 3 TiVo HD that has lifetime for a little more or even less than I'm paying for a single year with my current yearly sub. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that the lifetime is attached to the main board, not the drive. So if I could essentially transfer my entire setup to the same model machine already registered with lifetime, I don't see any downsides (if that is plausable based on the previous questions).

Has anyone tried this?

Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.
