Why? Well first I guess I could save a few bucks.
My bill is $120ish with basic cable and 60/6 internet and HBO. Pretty good, but Internet alone looks to be $50/mo. That's $70/month savings. It may be closer to $65/mo as there will taxes and fees on internet.
Next, I've been deleting/skipping through a lot of the sports I record. And realizing that the weekend stuff they show on network tv is probably enough for me. It's kind of like sports overload has made me less enthusiastic about sports. And I think I'd be more excited and tuned in if I just watched less. And network tv shows enough sports. Thus a reason for having cable just left the building for me. (Don't get me wrong. There will be times I will definitely miss it. There will be that game I want to watch and I won't be able to. And that is part of cable that is under appreciated.)
But I grew up with just 3 channels. And weekend sports was always something to look forward too.
Family doesn't care about sports so that's a non-issue for them.
Next a bunch of shows I was watching on cable are either done with or ran their course for me. Mad Men is over. Breaking Bad was over last year. Storage Wars, Pawn Stars, house hunters, Shipping wars, ...well I'm over them and have been for some time.
I guess what has taken their place is HBO and some of their current series as well as back catalog stuff. But now we can get HBO Now without cable. PLus I haven't watched Netflix much in the past year so now there's got to be a bunch of stuff on there I will find interesting.
The shows I do watch like Dateline, 48 hrs and 60 minutes are on network tv.
The family watches comedies but they are on network tv. Modern Family and Middle. OR they watch old comedies on Netflix or new ones like Orange is new Black on Netflix.
Kids like to have new cartoons on Cartoon Channel, but most of the time they watch cartoons on Netflix.
The late night talks shows on are on network tv.
I would miss one show. First 48. I like that one. And of course I won't have cable if an interesting new show comes along. At the same time,..I may be getting over that show as well.
My wife would miss Louie.
She watches some other stuff but stuff like Botched or Dancing Moms. Reality tv trash stuff. :D I think she can get by without those.
We can always spend a few bucks extra $$$ per month on a show we'd miss. A show like Louie might be $3 or $4/month at 12 episodes/yr averaged out. First 48 probably has twice that many episodes so double that for that show. Both shows are on Netflix if you want to wait a year after they come out on cable.
But every dollar I spend on individual shows means less of a reason to cancel cable.
The other motivating factor is to see if I (we) can actually pull it off and what the experience is like.
What is the user experience like if the family is streaming tv a lot more? Are we going to experience new problems that only streaming has? Will I realize I took some stuff for granted about cable?
Last I guess being ready to make the choice will give me leverage to get a better deal on cable. CAuse I will inquire about deals before I cancel.
Weird for me, but between a few of my shows going off the air or running their course, HBO being offered via streaming and not as interested in (or needing as much) sports as I was, I'm thinking I might be able to make do without cable.
But know family will hate it because they get pissed when I make changes. Takes awhile for wife to adjust.
Anyway thinking about it lately ...might work. And really absence makes the heart grow fonder. If I get away from cable it doesn't mean I won't return in a year. New programming and better deals could very well bring me back if I do end up leaving.
