So Tivo Online just came out and it has some benefits for the home. You can now watch Tivo shows on your PC when your home. This is nice, but most of us already have an iPad we can put next to the computer and watch from there.
The one feature in this Tivo Online that everyone wants is remote streaming. Of course Tivo won't do this due to copyright issues. No way to watch from your computer when you are not home. You can't even trick the website by setting up a vpn into your home. The Tivo box is still not detected.
I think the real feature Tivo should have been working on is Remote Show viewing through the Tivo box itself. Some people have multiple house and:
1. don't want to deal with different tv box interfaces
2. want to watch there shows from their other home
3. may not want to pay for cable in both locations
So Tivo should add a section under MY SHOWS called Remote Shows. This would allow anyone with the same tivo account used in multiple locations to stream shows between the boxes they have. This locks the content down, because it has to be the same tivo account and you are able to watch shows in your second home. This is a feature no other service has and would be a good selling point for tivo.
Taking it one step further. If you don't want a dvr at your second location, you can buy a Tivo Mini. You would connect the mini to the network you are at and log into your tivo account. This would give you the ability to watch your shows remotely at a second location, while keeping the content locked to the box.
Pretty much every tivo user wanting this feature would have no problem spending another $150 to place a Tivo Mini is their second home.
