My Roamio (basic model) has been freezing (when I hit rewind the image freezes for several seconds before rewinding starts; FFing thru commercials Play does not respond; Yes, there are fresh batteries in the remote) quite a lot recently so I was wondering if this is a sign of a dying HDD. This FixMyTiVo page suggests that the drive may be going and refers to a Weaknees Kickstart Code page for a diagnostic. My remote is IR only. When I unplug the Roamio for 15 seconds and the amber light starts to flash I press & hold Pause for 2 seconds, then release it. When I enter 54 on the remote for the Hard Drive Test nothing happens.
The Roamio has neither crashed nor rebooted and there is no loud mechanical clicking. Same with the WD eSATA external drive. I don't know the internal temp. but the Roamio box feels normal.
I am using an older WD eSATA external drive which I suspect may be a part of the problem. I rarely exceed 25% of recorded space so I am thinking about removing it but then will I lose shows?
