Cord un-cut

Well, metaphorically speaking anyway. I never cut the internet cord, which some people think cord-cutting must include, and I did not actually hook up any new connections from the street, but I have added DirecTV to my home.

My wife and I found that we were missing things on channels like AMC, BBC America, Freeform, and others that we would rather not wait around to watch, if we didn't have to. Additionally, DirecTV has a $50/month deal with a 2-year price lock which includes equipment installation and leasing (but not ESPN ). Finally, as DirecTV customers, we could then sign up for an "unlimited" data plan with AT&T, which amounts to 22GB of shared data which might get throttled if we go over, for a few more dollars per month than we were paying for our 5GB shared data plan which we have to pay attention to to avoid overages.

So, now that we have DirecTV, it is nice to have access to the extra channels, but the user experience is not quite up to par with our Roamio OTA. The mobile app in particular from DirecTV needs a lot of work. We can download shows from our HR54, but there is no skip forward in the app, like there is with Tivo's app. You have to manually drag the progress bar slider to go forward. The season pass/timer on DirecTV is not nearly as flexible as One Pass. Other than that, the HR54 is a decent DVR, but not really in the same league as Tivo.

So, we will probably keep the Roamio for the foreseeable future as my wife likes to download stuff to watch at lunch at work. Maybe if DirecTV improves their "mobile DVR," we will get rid of the Tivo. I will be dropping Hulu though, just as soon as I finish watching all of QI.

Maybe when my DirecTV contract is up in a couple of years, streaming services like PS Vue will be good enough that I will be willing to switch to one (local channels being the biggest failing I see right now). Time will tell.
