While Terra Incongnita had nothing to do with the Machine Wars and little to do with the Dominic/Elias conflict, I did quite like the episode as a character piece.
I appreciate when the writers try to do something different and I think they succeeded in producing a very layer peeling character study of one John Reese.
It also boasted the return of Taraji Henson as Detective Carter.
The episode appears to open with a flashback to early Season 2, (if you ignore the gunshot we heard in the beginning) when Finch is still complaining about Bear to Reese and Carter, who are staking the active number.
So, Reese and Carter get to talking and then we jump to present day where Fusco is looking into a dispute between some Elias and Dominic henchmen while Reese takes this weeks number, one Chase Pattterson
It turns out that Mr. Patterson was a suspect in the massacre of his wealthy family and has been out of the country for several years and the case had been assigned to one Joss Carter, which puts Reese in the awkward position of having to go through Carters things, in which he finds the photograph of him and Jessica in happier times.
In between flashbacks of Carter working the case with Detective Terney, John questions and then tails Mr. Patterson to his off the grid mountain cabin where he finds out that Pattersons bastard brother killed the family and wants to finish him off too. Unfortunately, John realizes this too late when hes shot by Gil the bastard.
He manages to take Gil out after Gil drags him outside to finish him off but its now too late. Chase has been drugged and Johna out in the freezing cold, off the grid, and crippled.
John starts remembering happier times, talking to Joss during that stakeout but we gradually realize that this is all in his head and is what he wished he had done, not what actually happened. And ghost Joss is imploring John to survive.
Its an interesting storytelling device and its an interesting way to get inside Johns head.
We find out in a devastating revelation, why he broke it off with Jessica and why hes kept people at arms length.
And he reveals how he wanted to be closer to Joss but couldnt do it in a gut wrenching confession.
John now realizes how hes kept people away and now it may cost him his life.
Fortunately, someone finds him in time, (Who though?)
Its a fascinating character study of John and it ably explains why he is the way he is.
I did like Root in the bridal gown and loved Fuscos look after Root talked to Elias man.
Heres hoping John mends well enough for the run down to the season finale.
