Series 2 for Backup

I have an older Series 2 with monthly subscription. Now also have a Roamio. The old Series 2 still has stuff on it I have downloaded and am keeping on it for watching and storage. Can I drop the monthly subscription on it but still use it for transferring programs two and from over my network, and watch stuff on it that I have previously downloaded but can’t transfer because of copyright controls? Also as an alternative, don’t know if it is practical to pull the hard drive out of it and put it into a second Series 2 with a lifetime subscription, as a second hard drive and keep what is stored on the Hard Drive?
