screen mirroring

Anybody know how to get around the block on screen mirroring on iPad? found out the hard way on vacation that it's blocked. I had a lighting to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable all ready to go. iPad came up on the big screen launched the Tivo APP all ways good but as soon as the stream started I got a msg on the screen it was blocked :(
