I guess it was on one of the movie channels lately and it looked kind of interesting from the description, so I had the DVR record it. I finally got around to watching it last night. Gotta say that it was one of the most powerful dramas I've watched in quite a while. Amazingly, considering the subject matter, nobody overacted as far as I'm concerned. The acting was absolutely superb. Not sure if it was the directing or editing or whatever else, but the mannerism, facial expressions, and voice tones were absolutely spot-on.
I don't typically watch a lot of dramas, especially the serious ones like this, but after reading the description I was compelled to check it out. I don't even really normally enjoy stories set in the 1700s very much, but within 10 minutes of the beginning of the movie, I was pulled in.
In movies/stories like this, it's all too easy to create excessive conflicts and situations to provoke emotions like anger and frustration. And while this one certainly did that to some level, it was in a much more controlled and well executed fashion that one others regularly do. The power in this movie was in its acting and obvious quiet thoughts of the main characters.
Additionally, the acting of Gugu completely blew me away. I was enjoying her performance through the fist 2/3 of the movie, but then she started evolving the character with the events unfolding and really pulled me into the story. This has to be one of the most finely developed character-building movies I've seen in a long time.
To top it all off, I didn't even know it was based on true events so that was a bit of a surprise to see the follow up info at the end.
Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, everybody who had anything to do with the creation of this movie should be very proud. I just ordered the Blu-ray. :)
