I really didn't care much for the finale. I understand they were trying to be different, but it just felt ... depressing to me.
Frank and Ray both died due to their own idiocy. The bad guys (well at least some of them) won in the end. They probably even recovered most of the money. It wasn't clear to me that the evidence handed over in Buenos Aires was actually going to be sufficient to convict anyone, or cause any change. Ray's message to his son tragically failed to send, because he drove into the middle of nowhere, where's there's no cell towers.
I mean, seriously, Ray just drives to the middle of nowhere, while he knows he probably has a team of professional killers on his tail? He could have driven to a police jurisdiction outside of the zone of corruption and at least tried to make his case. Sure, he might have still ended up in jail (especially with a bag full of money in the car), but trying to lose his pursuers the way he did felt like certain death.
Then we have Frank, who manages to buy pay off the guys who had just dug a grave for him. They mind-blowingly decide to let him live. Frank's grave is just feet away from him. What does he do? Get in a fight with one of them.
Unlikeable characters died in unlikeable ways.
