This is a recent and really strange problem with a TiVo setup I've had for years. It's so strange that it took me a while to isolate that this is what's happening, since everything I know about video connections tells me it's crazy.
I have a Series 2 (lifetime service, rather not upgrade) receiving a composite video signal from an HD DirecTV box. The TiVo output to the TV is also composite, and of course separate from the HDMI output from the DirecTV box to the TV.
Recently, I started getting recordings that were nothing but a black signal, with no audio. After a LOT of troubleshooting, I figured out that turning off the TV appears to cut the signal to the TiVo unit, and turning the TV back on does not restore the signal. I get the signal to the TiVo back only by switching the TV back to the DirecTV input, and then back again to the TiVo.
Believe me, I know how little sense that makes, but I tested it by starting a recording and after a couple of minutes, turning my TV off. When I turned it back on a couple minutes later, the TiVo was recording a black signal, starting from the point where I turned off the TV.
This has only been happening for the last couple of weeks, and I've had this setup for years. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to just leave my TV on all the time, but surely there's a more elegant answer to this mystery. Any ideas?
